World War II and Post-War Development

However, in the post-war years, Marikina rapidly rebuilt itself, regaining its status as a major industrial center. The 1950s and 1960s saw the expansion of the city’s shoe industry, making Marikina the leading producer of footwear in the Philippines.

Becoming a Modern City

In 1996, Marikina officially became a city under Republic Act 8223. This transition marked a new era of progress. The local government launched several infrastructure projects, including flood control systems, modernized roads, and public parks. The city also implemented strict environmental and cleanliness policies, earning Marikina the reputation of being one of the cleanest and most organized cities in Metro Manila.

The shoe industry remained a significant part of Marikina’s economy, with the establishment of the Marikina Shoe Museum, showcasing historical and celebrity-owned footwear. In addition, the city diversified its economy, attracting businesses, educational institutions, and shopping centers, making it a prime residential and commercial area.

Today, Marikina continues to thrive as a model city known for its well-maintained public spaces, disciplined communities, and strong local governance. It remains a leader in shoemaking while also embracing technological advancements and business innovations.
